Rediscover Audubon:
The Kentucky Bicentennial
This year is the bicentennial of John James Audubon's two-year
residency in Louisville, KY, before he and his family moved
downstream to Henderson, KY, in 1811.

The world famous painter’s life and work in Kentucky
was celebrated around the commonwealth, including
Louisville, the Falls of the Ohio State Park and the John
James Audubon State Park in Henderson.  We kicked the
bicentennial off by celebrating Audubon's birthday, April 26th, at
the Falls of the Ohio State Park, where he frequently painted.
Participants hiked, watched birds and ate birthday cake.

Most recently, the Louisville Audubon Society partnered with
Bernheim Forest to offer four fun days of historical re-
enactment.  Small groups met with “Audubon” and “Leyman” as
they explored Bernheim Forest, in search of the elusive Water
Thrush, to study its habits and portray its likeness.  Others went
birding with them or learned easy techniques for sketching
animals, plants and landscapes, using goose feathers and brown
ink made from walnut hulls.  During the Audubon Festival,
visitors met with “Audubon” and “Lehman” at their Bernheim
base camp, learned about their explorations and visited with local
environmental and natural history organizations.  And on
Saturday evening, folks enjoyed a period dinner of roasted quail,
root vegetables and wild foods prepared by “Audubon” and
“Lehman” over an open fire.

We hope to repeat this program next year.

Garvin Brown Nature Preserve.  The preserve is held by
River Fields, Inc and provides an abundance of edge
habitat for birds migrating along the Ohio River.

Meet at 9AM in the parking lot of Hays Kennedy Park, off
Bass Lane, off Upper River Rd in Prospect.

This outing will be led by Jane & Pat Bell of the Beckham
Bird Club.  For more details or questions, contact them by
phone (502-326-9610) or email (patjanebell@bellsouth.net).

Presentation on Local Environmental
History, 7PM, Monday, Sept 15th, LNC
If hope for our environment and public health sometimes
escapes you, our September program will provide some
encouraging perspective.  Louisville’s air pollution
problems were so severe 70 years ago that visibility was a
little as 150 feet and street cars needed their headlights
in midday.  Back then, the typical resident of Louisville
inhaled a cup-and-a-half of coal soot annually!

On Monday, Sept 15th, at 7PM, at the Louisville Nature
Center, environmental engineer and educator Sarah Lynn
Cunningham will present her paper, recently published in
Ohio Valley History, “From Smoke-Filled Skies to Smoke-
Filled Rooms: Louisville’s Political Battles Over the 'Smoke
Evil.'’”  And since few of us could imagine such pollution,
she’ll also show archival photos.  Want a sneak peek?
